Headquartered in Charlottesville, Virginia, the University of Virginia Community Credit Union, or UVA Community Credit Union, is a not-for-profit financial cooperative owned by individual members.
Over 70,000 Virginians have been associated with the organization.
UVA Community Credit Union attributes four items to the continued success of the organization over the years:
- Exclusive focus on the local communities
- Highly dedicated to community service with an emphasis on improving financial literacy of the common masses
- Emphasis on innovation, research and development, and technology
- Transparent commitment to offer ever more powerful and convenient financial products and services
History of the UVA Community Credit Union
It was the time of the 1950s. Many government agencies, universities, and corporations in the region created a number of credit unions to meet the financial needs of their employees, and UVA Hospital was among them.
Daniel D. Colcock, along with a group of University of Virginia Hospital administrators, founded the University of Virginia Hospital Employees Credit Union in 1954.
The University of Virginia Hospital Employees Credit Union expanded and extended its membership to other employee groups while simultaneously absorbing a number of smaller local credit unions.
In 1976, the University of Virginia Hospital Employees Credit Union changed its name to the University of Virginia Employees Credit Union.
Very soon, it got merged with credit unions serving employees of Martha Jefferson Hospital, the City of Charlottesville, Albemarle County, and other organizations.
The year 1997 was a pivotal one for the credit union. It was observed that the small banks around the country were closing or being absorbed by much larger competitors.
In response, the UVA Community Credit Union’s leadership decided that it had a responsibility to offer the advantages of local banking to more and more people in Central Virginia.
With the approval of the State Corporation Commission, the credit union adopted a community charter and subsequently changed its name to the University of Virginia Community Credit Union.
Membership of the UVA Community Credit Union
Membership is open to those who live, work, or own a business located in Charlottesville, Albemarle, Culpeper, Fauquier, Fluvanna, Greene, Louisa, Madison, Nelson, Orange, or Rappahannock.
During 2018, UVA Community Credit Union made significant advances in delivering additional online features.
For example, becoming a member is now easier than ever with the online membership application.
When a person opens his business membership account, he or she actually opens a share savings account and becomes a member-owner of the credit union with access to the credit union’s full menu of products and services for business members.
To open a business membership account, one has to complete a membership application and mail or bring it to any of UVA Community Credit Union’s branch locations.
One has to make a $100.00 deposit into his or her share savings account and pay a one-time $5.00 membership fee.
Deposit accounts are insured to at least $250,000 by the National Credit Union Administration, a U.S. government agency.
Certainly, each member is an equal shareholder in the UVA Community Credit Union.
The credit union invites its members to attend the annual meeting and vote for the credit union’s volunteer board of directors.
UVA Community Credit Union believes in the principle that “when you become a member, you’re always a member.”

In 2018, the UVA Community Credit Union was excited to expand these types of celebrations.
The credit union was honored to be the title sponsor of the 32nd annual Warrenton Christmas Parade and foresees a long-lasting partnership celebrating a time-honored tradition within the community.
In addition, the Credit Union sponsored Fill a Stocking in Fauquier and Culpeper counties for the second year. We look forward to developing deeper-rooted relationships like these in the coming years.
In the year 2018, the UVA Community Credit Union was fortunate to grow the relationship it had with UVA Athletics and seems to be excited to be the title sponsor for UVA Women’s Basketball.

The financial education of young people is taken into consideration at the credit union.
The Credit Union has a growing number of student-run branches in local high schools, and it offers scholarships to seniors at each of the area high schools.
UVA Community Credit was successful in presenting its annual tuition scholarship of $1,500 to an outstanding high school senior, with the enthusiastic support of the members in attendance at their annual meeting.
Eighteen scholarships were awarded to students in a combination of public high schools, private schools, alternative schools, and students who are homeschooled in counties located in the credit union field of membership, which includes Charlottesville, Albemarle, Culpeper, Fauquier, Fluvanna, Greene, Louisa, Madison, Nelson, Orange, or Rappahannock.
UVA Community Credit Union’s mission is to improve the well-being of its members and to strengthen the communities in which they live.
To accomplish this mission, the UVA Community Credit Union places an emphasis on education by offering a variety of free community education seminars and through the high school scholarship program.
- Community Partnerships
UVA Community Credit Union is a very active member of the Thomas Jefferson Area Earned Income Tax Credit Coalition. This coalition supports low- to moderate-income working families in Central Virginia.
The Thomas Jefferson Area Earned Income Tax Credit Coalition provides free tax preparation assistance and financial education.
It also promotes the full use of the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) for eligible taxpayers.
According to IRS estimates, 15 to 20 percent of eligible workers do not claim their EITC benefits.
This statistic doesn’t augur well, as it means that millions of dollars are not finding their way into the pockets of working families and individuals who are eligible to save.
This directly points out the fact that too many people are going without savings they could be using to help care for their families as well as provide a much-needed injection of funds into their local economy.
- Community Partner Groups ( CPGs)
The employee benefit that is most appreciated is financial education. However, finding a trusted source of financial information is very difficult.
Hence, UVA Community Credit Union has created the Community Partner Group program, which aims to provide a variety of free financial benefits to local organizations.
Credit union representatives consult with human resources personnel at area businesses, academic institutions, and nonprofits as part of the aforementioned program.
Working together, they develop a customized suite of financial benefit services.
Topics like budgeting, understanding credit, savings and investment planning, and fraud and security are included in the educational seminar.
For employees, UVA Community Credit Union’s objective is to encourage savings and maximize employee contributions to retirement plans.
Achievements of the Credit Union
Time and again, UVA Community Credit Union has shown it’s worth by receiving a variety of community accolades.
Members of the Charlottesville community voted them the Best Financial Institution and Best Mortgage Company in the Daily Progress Readers’ Choice Awards, the Best Bank and Best Mortgage Lender in C-VILLE Weekly’s Best of C-VILLE, and the Favorite Bank/Credit Union in the very famous Charlottesville Family Magazine.
UVA Community Credit Union has been continuously recognized by the Small Business Administration (SBA) as the top credit union in the Richmond District since 2009.
This honor is given to the credit union with the highest number of loans originated and closed in Virginia, with the exception of the Washington, D.C., metropolitan area.
Supervisory Report
The UVA Community Credit Union Board of Directors appointed a Supervisory Committee to protect the interests of the credit union’s members.
It is charged with reviewing credit union operations, conducting an annual audit, evaluating and upgrading internal control procedures, and safeguarding member assets.
The supervisory committee adheres to the mandates of the Federal Credit Union Act and complies with all National Credit Union Administration (NCUA) rules and regulations.
The Credit Union prepares reports quarterly for the State Corporation Commission and NCUA.
In 2018, the Supervisory Committee commissioned the accounting firm of Doeren Mayhew of Miami, Florida, to conduct the annual audit.
It was performed in accordance with generally accepted auditing standards followed in the United States and included tests of the accounting records and systems.
Doeren Mayhew issued an unmodified opinion that the Credit Union’s December 31, 2018, consolidated financial statements present fairly, in all material respects, the consolidated financial position of the Credit Union and its subsidiaries.
